Malaysia's badminton campaign at the Asian Games received a major boost as two doubles pairs advanced to the quarter-finals, putting them within touching distance of guaranteed medals.
In the men's doubles last-16 clash at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium in Aichi, Japan, the sixth-ranked world pair of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani delivered a commanding performance against Japan's Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi. The Malaysian duo secured a straight-games victory with scores of 21-19 and 21-16 in a 35-minute encounter, eliminating the world number nine Japanese pair.
Their reward for this victory is a quarter-final showdown tomorrow against China's formidable third-ranked combination of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang. This match will determine whether Goh and Nur Izzuddin can secure at least a bronze medal, as all semi-finalists are guaranteed a podium finish under the tournament format.
The women's doubles event saw an even more dominant display from Malaysia's world number five pairing of Pearly Tan and M Thinaah. They required just 29 minutes to overwhelm Thailand's Napapakorn Tungkasatan and Hathaithip Mijad, recording an emphatic 21-8, 21-12 victory in their round of 16 match.
Tomorrow's semi-final will see Pearly and Thinaah face India's 26th-ranked duo Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly. The Indian pair earned their place in the last four by producing a stunning upset, defeating Japan's third-ranked team of Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in straight games.
Malaysia has a recent history of success in Asian Games badminton doubles events. At the previous edition in 2022, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik captured a men's doubles bronze medal. The women's doubles bronze at the 2014 Games came through Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei.
Both Malaysian pairs now stand one victory away from matching or potentially surpassing those achievements, with medal prospects looking increasingly promising for the national team.
